Harry Atherton
Age: 23
Trade: Dryliner
Resident Borough: Tower Hamlets
Apprenticeship: Level 2 Interior Systems
College: Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College
Background: Harry always had an interest in the construction industry and before getting on an apprenticeship with us at K10, he was working on site as a labourer. This wasn’t sustainable employment and he was constantly just waiting for work to come up, so he applied to K10.
What happened next: Harry came in for an interview and impressed his soon to be Apprenticeship Manager. He was then placed on site in Tower Hamlets to do a Level 2 Interior Systems Apprenticeship.
During the Apprenticeship: Harry was enrolled on to the Level 2 Interior Systems apprenticeship, which was for 15 months. He was working full time on site, but was given coursework from our chosen college, Ealing, Hammersmith and West London, to complete by the time an assessor visited him on site.
In his own words, Harry said the following;
‘I enjoyed being on site. I was meeting different people all the time and working outdoors which I thoroughly enjoyed. I was in constant contact with my Apprenticeship Manager, Jack. I thought this was really good; he was so helpful especially when I had any questions about my apprenticeship. The subcontractors I was placed with during my apprenticeship, C&G Plastering and Gypcraft, were really efficient. If I needed any work for my NVQ, they would allow me to do it. One site I worked on was New Union Wharf in Tower Hamlets, the main contractor was Hills Partnerships and they always made sure I was given a day to day plan. One piece of advice I have for anyone is to stay put. You get out what you put in, that’s the way it works, just stay focused. The staff at K10 are so friendly, they are there for you and they want you to do well. K10 helped me on to a platform I wouldn’t have been able to reach otherwise. I started at the bottom and they guided me to where I am now and where I will end up in the future.’
After the Apprenticeship: Harry completed the Level 2 Interior Systems Apprenticeship in 15 months, and is now working for a Sub-Contractor as a fixer. He works all over London with lots of and earns anything between £110 – £140 a day.
Big congratulations to Harry for completing and good luck for the future!
