Sanjay Sharma
Age: 24
Trade: Electrician
Apprenticeship: Level 3 Electrical Installations
Home Borough: Ealing
Background: Sanjay was studying towards his Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installations whilst working part time at a warehouse before finding K10 and starting his apprenticeship. He found K10 towards the start of his studies
and knew an apprenticeship was the way for him to get his desired career as a fully qualified electrician.
During the Apprenticeship: During his apprenticeship, Sanjay, from Ealing, was placed on one site throughout. He started and finished his apprenticeship at the St. George project, Dickens Yard under the care of Wilton Electrics. ‘I enjoyed being on the job so much. You enjoy the work you’re doing in college and then you get to go and do it on site for real and it’s great. You get to showcase your knowledge whilst working on different parts of the site all the time. This allowed me to really progress on my electrical work and be able to show my employers how capable I was. From this, I was given harder tasks to complete which furthered my confidence. I had lot of help from Peter Gullen, my site manager. He often made time for me and if I was unsure about something, he would advise me on how to improve and gave me time to work on my NVQ if I needed it and really supported me through my apprenticeship as a whole. As people were moving in to the flats when they were built, you see them move in to their new property and they are happy with it which makes you proud or if something needs fixing you feel confident enough to go into their home and fix it.’
‘Working on site with new people all the time not only within my trade but all trades kept work exciting. You’re able to pick up new skills and build up a list of industry contacts which is always a plus. Peter Bannister, my Apprenticeship Manager, would come and see me every 4-6 weeks, making sure site was going well. If I had any issues he would be there to sort it and make sure everything was going the way it was meant to. I really appreciated this, it meant I was happy on site and getting my work done to complete as soon as I possibly could.’
‘For anyone looking to do an apprenticeship, I’d say be confident in yourself and enjoy it. You’ll get stressed at times but that’s part of working life and if anything it helps you learn a lot quicker. K10 really helped me a lot with my apprenticeship. They found me the placement for me to work on to become a qualified electrician, they’ve helped me start my career and now I’ve got a job for life.’
After the Apprenticeship: Since completing his apprenticeship, Sanjay has been taken on direct to work for Wilton Electrics whilst they finish on the project and he will be working with them in the future. Well done, Sanjay, your hard work has paid off and your career as an electrician can start!
