What initially attracted you to the Thames Water Shared Apprenticeship Scheme?

I was looking for a construction related apprenticeship and applied on several job boards with my CV. Luckily K10 spotted it and gave me a call. K10 came across it and got in touch. At the time, I didn’t fully understand what civil engineering involved or much about the water industry, but the opportunity caught my interest after talking it through with K10’s onboarding team.

What was your overall experience on the Shared Apprenticeship Scheme?

My experience was excellent. The companies involved, Mott MacDonald Bentley and Thames Water, were fantastic hosts and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunities they gave me. I learned how to conduct myself professionally, gained confidence and developed both personally and technically. The variety of roles, projects and organisations you experience through the scheme makes it incredibly valuable.

How did the rotational/shared aspect of the scheme benefit your development?

I think the rotational element is one of the scheme’s biggest strengths. Moving between different environments allowed me to build a broad skill set and gain a well-rounded understanding of the industry. That variety has played a huge part in shaping my professional development.

Did you feel supported by the K10 team throughout your placement?

Yes, absolutely. The K10 team were always accessible and willing to help. My Programme Manager checked in regularly, offering support, guidance and advice throughout my placement.

What role are you now in, and what does your day-to-day job involve?

I’m currently an ‘Assistant Technical Assurance Engineer’ in Thames Water’s Major Projects department. My day to day usually consists of developing and assuring the quality of solutions provided to us by our consultants, on-site audits and document reviews.

I’ve also had the chance to lead an AI project and I’m currently on an internal secondment with the Transformation team, helping scale the business for AMP8/9 investment.

What advice would you give to someone considering the Shared Apprenticeship Scheme?

Make the most of every moment. The construction industry is built on experience and the Shared Apprenticeship Scheme offers invaluable hands-on learning. Gaining real project exposure while completing your apprenticeship and doing so with highly credible companies gives you an exceptional foundation for your career.

Jack Wells, Former Civil Engineering Apprentice

The two years I spent on the Shared Apprenticeship Scheme were the most impactful of my life. I was incredibly fortunate to be found by K10 and given the opportunity to join and gain experience with industry leading companies. Since then, I’ve grown personally and professionally. Most importantly, I’ve discovered what I’m truly good at. None of this would have been possible without K10 or the Shared Apprenticeship Scheme.

Mark Davis, Senior Technical Manager – Thames Water

The Thames Water Shared Scheme has delivered strong results, helping to identify suitable candidates with K10 guiding them through a two‑year programme to achieve their Level 3 Civil Engineering qualification. Jack Wells is an excellent example, he impressed throughout his placement, was offered a permanent role with Thames Water and gained professional recognition as a Technician Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers
